Rectangle and banquet table wedding seating chart template
Long rectangle tables give a reception a warm, family-dinner feel and fit narrow rooms, barns and tents better than rounds. This template uses 8-foot banquet tables joined into long rows with a head table, and includes the counts for 50 to 200 guests.
The layout at a glance
- Rows: 4 rows × 4 joined 8-foot tables, 4 guests per side per table.
- Head table: one long table facing the guests for the couple and wedding party.
- Room: rows run lengthwise, so guests face each other and the head table sits across the short wall.
Table sizes and seats
| Table | Typical size | Seats (sides only) | Seats (with ends) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6-foot banquet | 72" × 30" | 6 | 8 |
| 8-foot banquet | 96" × 30" | 8 | 10 |
| Two 8-foot side by side | 96" × 60" | 8 | 10–12 |
Seat counts assume standard dining or folding chairs and a plated or family-style dinner. Chiavari chairs are slimmer and can squeeze in one extra guest per side; armchairs do the opposite.
How many tables for 50–200 guests
Using 8-foot tables at 8 guests each, joined into rows:
| Guests | 8-ft tables | Example rows |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 7 | 2 rows (4 + 3 tables) |
| 100 | 12–13 | 3 rows of 4 (96 side seats + 6 end seats = 102) |
| 150 | 19 | 4 rows of 5 (20 tables) |
| 200 | 25 | 5 rows of 5 |
The two end seats on each row are a bonus: use them for a grandparent who needs easy access, or keep them as overflow seats for surprise plus-ones.
Planning rows and aisles
- Row length: four or five joined tables (32–40 feet) is a comfortable maximum. Longer rows make it hard for guests at the middle to get out.
- Between rows: roughly five to six feet, so two chairs fit back to back and servers can pass.
- Breaks: leave a gap halfway along very long rows to create a shortcut to the bar or dance floor.
- Direction: run rows toward the head table, so guests turn sideways rather than fully around for toasts.
Seating guests along a long table
Long tables change who talks to whom. At a round table a guest can talk to everyone; at a banquet table they mostly talk to the three or four people around them. Plan in pods of four to six people across and alongside each other, rather than thinking in whole tables.
- Put the liveliest pods in the middle of each row — conversation spreads outward.
- Seat couples across from each other or side by side, but keep them in the same pod.
- Place quieter guests next to a connector, someone who knows people on both sides.
- Keep people who must stay apart on different rows, not just at opposite ends of the same row; long tables are closer than they look.
Mixing rectangle and round tables
A popular compromise is a long family table for the couple and wedding party, surrounded by round tables for everyone else. Another is long rows down the centre with rounds around the edges. Keep the walkway clear where the two shapes meet, and number tables so a guest can find “Table 7” whether it is round or rectangular.

Frequently asked questions
How many people fit at an 8-foot rectangle table?
An 8-foot (96 by 30 inch) banquet table seats 8 — four per side — and 10 if you also use both ends. A 6-foot table seats 6, or 8 with the ends. When tables are joined end to end, only the two outer ends of the whole row can take chairs.
How many 8-foot tables do I need for 100 guests?
At 8 guests per table you need 13 tables (104 seats). Alternatively, join 12 tables into three rows of four: 96 side seats plus 6 end seats gives 102 places.
Are rectangle tables better than round tables for a wedding?
Neither is better; they suit different rooms. Long tables fit narrow rooms, barns and tents, and make family-style service easy. Round tables make conversation easier across the table. Many couples mix both.
How much space do I need between rows of banquet tables?
Plan roughly five to six feet between rows so chairs can sit back to back and servers can still walk through. Ask your venue or caterer, since service style changes what they need.
Are 30-inch-wide tables too narrow for centerpieces?
They can be, once you add place settings, glassware and shared platters. If you want lush centerpieces or family-style dishes, ask your rental company about wider tables, or place two 30-inch tables side by side.
